Vegan Substitute
Best vegan beef substitutes for burgers, stews, tacos, and stir-fries. From Beyond Meat to seitan and mushroom-based whole-food options.
Beef has the highest environmental footprint of any food: 60 kg CO2 per kg of meat, uses 15,400 litres of water per kg, and is a leading cause of Amazon deforestation.
Burgers, sliders, meatloaf
Beyond uses pea protein; Impossible uses soy and heme for a bloody appearance. Cook like real burgers, don't overcook.
Stews, stir-fries, kebabs, gyros
Highest protein density of any plant meat (~25g per 100g). Chewy, meaty texture. Not for gluten-free diets.
Burgers, steaks, grilling
Marinate in balsamic, soy sauce, and garlic for 30 minutes before grilling. Rich umami flavor.
For burgers, Beyond or Impossible patties are most realistic. For stews and stir-fries, seitan has the best meaty texture and highest protein. For whole-food options, portobello mushrooms or lentils work well.
Plant-based beef has zero cholesterol, less saturated fat, and no antibiotics or hormones. However, processed options like Beyond and Impossible are higher in sodium. Whole-food options like lentils and mushrooms are the healthiest.
Impossible Burger uses heme (from soy) to replicate the taste and appearance of beef, including a pinkish center. Most people in blind taste tests find it very close. Seitan replicates the chewy texture well.
