These figures come from a 2023 study published in Nature Food by Scarborough et al., analysing the diets of 55,000 people in the UK. Vegan diets produce approximately 75% less greenhouse gas emissions than high-meat diets.
The food system accounts for 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions (Poore & Nemecek, 2018). Animal agriculture alone is responsible for 14.5% of all emissions (FAO). Switching to a plant-based diet is the single biggest thing an individual can do to reduce their environmental footprint.
